Magic Town Huamantla

Huamantla is located within 42 kilometers of Tlaxcala. On arrival of the Spanish Hernan Cortes was established a few days this area inhabited by Otomi, while waiting the news of the messenger who was sent to the dominions of the Republic of Tlaxcala.
San Luis Huamantla was founded on October 18, 1534, the land of brave warriors like Tlahuicole, land where great battles have been fought like Tecoac in 1876 when General Porfirio Diaz defeated the American army.
Huamantla the heroic, the Brava, but also the noble and devout, with a vocation to art and unity that transforms the streets into rivers of colors every August 14th to decorate the procession of the Virgin of Charity.
A town of traditions that are sweetened with whole cane sugar of the muégano, typical of the region, transformed to be more magical and the small-town opens its soul to let you enter through the front door and a chance to, experience hike up our mountain, drink pulque, sleep in a hacienda, dream with the puppets and make a sawdust rug, all this and more awaits you in Huamantla.

What are Magic Saturdays?

Each Saturday starts at noon, a mat in the alley Margarita Maza de Juarez on the side of City Hall, we invite you to visit us and participate with your family in the ephemeral art that symbolizes the identity of Huamantla
In the afternoon activity is accompanied with fireworks and Matachines dance, a window into the magic that exists in "The Night That Nobody Sleeps" every weekend.

What to visit?

Puppet Museum (MUNATI)

Located in Huamantla in Memorial to The Rosete Aranda Family, founders of the most successful puppet company in Mexico in the nineteenth century, came to have 5,000 pieces made by them, wrote and made their own plays. Shows were given to the presidents Benito Juarez and Antonio Lopez de Santa Ana

Bullfighting Museum.

A place in memory of bullfighting, you will find a gallery of fighters from different eras, models of bullrings in Mexico, posters, newspapers with published news of bullfighter victories, bullfighter suits, bulls' heads and a mural dedicated to bullfighting.

City Museum.

It occupies what in colonial times was a granary of the Franciscan convent, with thick walls and beautiful arches, keeps the memories of the people of Huamantla, from pre-hispanic pieces to portraits and trophies of characters such as Alcon of Huamantla.

  • Parish of San Luis Obispo

A church that attracts your eyes with the vividness of the colors inviting to visit, you will find inside a beautiful XVII century altarpiece, carved in wood and laminated in gold that has the rare distinction of being asymmetrical and has put in a dilemma curators who have been working on its restoration.

  • Franciscan Convent.

Highlights the stone carved tower, wood floor and the image of the Black Christ adored by locals and pilgrims who come asking for a blessing, go out to the streets of Huamantla December 31. Date on which rugs are also made of sawdust.

  • Church of the Virgin of Charity.

A must visit of the Mariano temple the most important in Huamantla, on the night of August 14th an important celebration with carpet making throughout the month of August and carpets made of sawdust for procession.
Soon you can visit the museum, where they display dresses and robes embroidered with gold thread.

  • La Malinche. La Malinche. Make Huamantla your starting point to the mountain.
  • The Hill of Xalapaxco. A place where you'll find nine craters and enjoy beautiful landscapes, horse walking is always a nice trip for nature lovers.

How to get

From México:
In Passenger Bus Terminal TAPO East, there are two bus lines that take you to Huamantla with direct service; ATAH and First Plus(Primera Plus).
Hours: 7:00 to 19:00 hrs.
Departing every hour

From Puebla:
The CAPU (Puebla Bus Station) there are two bus lines ATAH and Sorianos.
Hours: 5:30 to 21:30 hrs.
Departing every 25 min.

From Veracruz.
The AU line takes you to Huamantla.
Hours: 5:00 to 00:00 hrs.
Departing every hour
